F.A.Q.

Frequently Asked Questions about Keller International School

Is the program for all learners?  Will all children be included?

Yes, all children will be included.  The academic program for elementary students is flexible to accommodate special needs students to gifted students.

What is the student/teacher ratio?

The student/teacher ratio will be consistent with class size in all District elementary schools.

What happens after 5th grade?  Are there plans for the IB program at the Middle School and High School?

We believe that this is a good, solid instructional strategy which will prepare students for middle school and high school wherever they may go.  We are starting with the IB Primary Years Program (PYP).  If there is sufficient interest, we hope to move in this direction in the future.  Having a middle school program is in our vision.  It should be noted, however, that the middle school is already inquiry based, interdisciplinary and collaboratively focused.

Will there be second language instruction?

There will be weekly instruction in Spanish and world languages will be infused throughout the curriculum.

Is there any proof that the IB program works?

Studies of international PYP programs report excellent test scores on state standardized tests and highly successful college placement of IB students.  PYP students consistently outscore their peers in reading.

What is the cost of the IB program and how will it be funded?

Most of the costs of the program will be funded through grants.

Will the IB program be open to Schools of Choice students?

Keller International School will not be open to Schools of Choice students during the first year.

Do you have to qualify or be tested for the program?

There is no testing.  IB is not an elite program.  It is for all levels of learners.  It is rigorous, but not intended as a gifted program.

How will the teachers be trained?

All teachers will attain full Level 1 training during 2007.  Level 2 training will commence the following year.

Where can I find more information about the International Baccalaureate School (IB)?

To learn more about the International Baccalaureate Organization Primary Years Program, which will be piloted at Keller International in the 2007-2008 school year, go to the IBO website: http://www.ibo.org

How can I enroll my child in the IB (Keller International) school?

Enrollment in the IB school will be handled through the Open Enrollment process.  If Whittier/Keller is your resident school, your child will automatically be included in the IB program.  If your resident school is elsewhere, you will need to write a letter requesting that your child attend Keller International in the Fall of 2007 and send a copy to Carol Hansen, John Houghton and your resident school Principal.  Carol Hansen, Executive Director4 of Student Services, 1123 Lexington Blvd., Royal Oak, MI  48073 Phone: (248) 435-8400 Ext. 232.  John Houghton, Principal of Whittier/Keller International, 815 E.
