History
The original “Oak Ridge” school was located on the northeast corner of 13 Mile Rd. and Rochester where McDonalds is now. It was first known as Williams school after David Williams, the man who donated the land for the school. In 1950 Royal Oak had (3) Junior High Schools. It was decided that all (3) would be named after famous women in American history. The children voted and the school was named Mary Lyons.
The current Oak Ridge Elementary School was built in 1951 on its current site. Miss Elaine Burroughs served as the Principal. In 1953 a second unit was built to accommodate 300 students in addition to the 250 accommodated in the original 1951 building.
Additional renovations to Oak Ridge occurred in 1962 and again in 1987.
In 1989 Oak Ridge was named one of 15 representative elementary schools from the state of Michigan to receive state level recognition as an exemplary school.
Currently, Oak Ridge has an enrollment of 430 students in 16 regular education classrooms ranging from Young 5’s through 5th grade.
