History
In 1953, the School District of the City of Royal Oak acquired 22.27 acres of land at its current location from Mr. and Mrs. Alex Kushner and Mr. and Mrs. Morris Sukenic. A portion of the 22.27 acres was devoted to the creation of Campbell Road. The original plan called for the school to be built on land to the west of the newly created road, but in 1954 Mark Twain Elementary School was built on the remaining acreage east of Campbell Road.
Mark Twain Elementary was completed in 1955 with a cost of $450,000. The school was dedicated on May 5, 1955 with a program held in the new gymnasium that included guest speakers Mr. Clarence Kimball and Mr. N. J. Quickstad. The first Principal of the new building was Mrs. Goldie Wheeler, who was the former Principal of Franklin Elementary.
One year after opening its doors to students and staff, Mark Twain had two additional classrooms added to accommodate kindergarten classes. The north wing was later added in 1961. Enrollment peaked in the 1964-1965 school year with a total of 941 students in grades K-6. A massive renovation of the building occurred in 1993 to update the facility to meet changing educational needs.
At present, Mark Twain Elementary is home to 180 students. There are 8 regular education classrooms, ranging from Young 5s to 5th grade, and 3 POHI classrooms, ranging from Pre-School to 5th grade.
