The Board of Education consists of seven members, each elected to a four-year term. To become a Board of Education member, you must be a resident of the school district and a registered voter. The school district holds an annual school election (currently the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May) at which board members are elected.

Board of Education members in Royal Oak do not receive compensation and meet on the average of twice a month. All Board Meetings must comply with the Open Meetings Act.

The role of the Board of Education is to set policies for the school district, handle student discipline and employee discipline hearings, and approve a balanced budget each year. Each of Royal Oak School Board members acts as a liaison for at least one PTA and one community organization.
