BOARD OF EDUCATION

FEBRUARY 14, 2008 MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

1.         Next Board of Education Meeting has been changed to Wednesday,          February 27, 2008, 6:00 p.m.

2.         Governor's 2008-2009 School Aid Budget Proposal calls for a potential $108 increase in per pupil foundation allowance. If approved, this 1.16% increase would yield approximately $568,000 to the District.

3.            Student event highlights include:

  • Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp awarded $103,150 scholarships to 209 Royal Oak Middle School and High School fine arts students;
  • Royal Oak High School Acorn Editor in Chief Jillian Rodriguez received Al Neuharth national journalism award;
  • 50 Royal Oak High School students will spend Winter Break in New Orleans in a Hurricane Katrina clean-up community service project.

4.            Royal Oak Teachers of the Year were announced:

  • Northwood Elementary - Patty Hein, 4th Grade
  • Royal Oak Middle School - Keith Kohring, Band
  • Royal Oak High School - David Barnett, Science

5.         Dave Potter, an 18-year employee of the Royal Oak Neighborhood School District, named Royal Oak High School football coach.

6.            The Fast ForWard reading program will be piloted at Oakland Elementary.

7.            Announcement of upcoming events:

  • March 1 - Swing Dance to benefit the Murals Committee and Royal Oak Historical Society, 7:00 p.m., Royal Oak Middle School
  • March 7 - Northwood Community Open House, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
