H1N1
October 27, 2009
Dear Parent/Guardians and District Staff:
The District has received several questions about our response to the H1N1 Influenza, as we already have students in our district experiencing flu-like symptoms. Please know that we work closely with the Oakland County Health Division, and are taking direction and guidance from both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Oakland County Health Division (OCHD).
The Oakland County Health Division is not recommending that letters be sent when a student or staff member is absent with the flu, but instead that school communities are educated on ways to reduce the risk of getting and spreading flu viruses. Our parents/guardians were provided with a letter regarding H1N1 at the opening of school this year, as well as a letter from the Oakland County Health Division. Both of these letters have been posted on the District website. The following represent ways to reduce the risk of getting and spreading flu viruses:
- Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
- Avoid or reduce contact with infected persons whenever possible.
- Cough or sneeze into your sleeve, not your hands.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are spread this way.
- Consider getting an annual flu shot if you are a member or caregiver of a high-risk group.
- Students and staff who appear to have flu-like illness should be sent to a room separate from others until they can be sent home.
- Remain at home 24 hours after you are free of fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever reducing medications.
The Oakland County Health Division will offer 2009 the H1N1 vaccine clinic this Thursday, October 29, 2009 from 3:30-9:00pm at the following location* in the Walled Lake School District:
Geisler Middle School
46720 West Pontiac Trail
Commerce Township, MI 48390
*Please do not contact the school directly. If you have questions about this clinic contact the Oakland County Health Division Nurse on Call at 800-848-5533.
Get the most up to date information from the Oakland County Health Division www.oakgov.com/health. Information regarding future clinics for flu vaccines is available on this website as well.
Please let me know if I may be of further help.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Goodgine
Executive Director, Administrative Services
