NOVEMBER 12, 2009 BOARD OF EDUCATION

REGULAR MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

1.         Gifts

            A $500 donation from an anonymous donor for the Royal Oak Middle School Special Education White Team to provide extra experiences and activities for the students.

            A donation of $1,473 by the Helen Keller PTA to fund the purchase of a handicapped accessible playground and allow for installation of Phase I.         


2.         Calendar Recommendation

            The Board adopted a school calendar for November 30, 2009 through March 1, 2010.

            November 30, 2009 - Return date following Thanksgiving recess

            December 21, 2009 - January 1, 2010 - Winter Holiday recess

            January 4, 2010 - Return date following Winter Holiday recess

            January 18, 2010 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day recess

            February 1, 2010 - Teacher Records Day, no school for students

            February 18-19, 2010 - February recess

            February 22, 2010 - Return date following February recess

            Professional Development Meetings for certified secondary staff - December 2 &  8, 2009; January 12, February 3 & 9, 2010

            Professional Development meetings for certified elementary staff - December 8, 2009; January 12, February 4 & 9, 2010

            Business meetings for all certified staff - January 5 & February 2, 2010

            The approved calendar segments will be posted on the District website, http://www.royaloakschools.com/. A five-year calendar listing the first day of school, Winter Holiday recess and spring break may also be found on the District website.


3.         2009-10 Budget Recommendations

The Board approved the 2009-10 budget reductions as presented. These mid-year budget reductions of $2.5 million were necessitated due to the state's financial crisis and loss of funding to the District. The recommendations minimally impact programs offered to students in the current year. The complete presentation will be posted on the District website, http://www.royaloakschools.com/


4.         Community Farm Recommendation

            District is authorized to sign an agreement with the Royal Oak Business Association for the temporary use of the Lincoln site as a Community Farm. Net proceeds will go to the Royal Oak Foundation for Public Education.


5.         Resolution in Support of Funding for Education

           

            The Board approved a resolution in support of funding for education encouraging "the governor and legislature to immediately find the revenues necessary to reduce the cuts to the educational budget to meet their Constitutional responsibility to the children of this state and to look beyond the immediate revenue shortfall and focus on the perennial and structural deficit that plagues school finance in Michigan".


6.         Extension Agreements

            The Board approved Contract Extension Agreements with the Royal Oak Education Association and the Royal Oak Educational Support Association.


7.         2010-11 Schools of Choice Recommendation

Schools of Choice applications will be accepted December 1, 2009 through

June 25, 2010 for kindergarten through third grade eligible applicants on a per building space available basis for the 2010-11 school year.


8.         Kindergarten Roundup Dates

Kindergarten Roundups will be held in December according to the following schedule:
