ORGANIZATIONAL AND REGULAR MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

 

1.            Seating of newly-elected Board Members Jeff Brinker and Carrie Beerer. Mr. Brinker was appointed as the Jane Addams Elementary liaison and Ms. Beerer will be the Oak Ridge Elementary Liaison.

2.            Election of 2010 Board of Education Officers:

President - Michael Hartman

Vice President - Gary Briggs

Secretary - Marty Cardamone

Treasurer - Deb Anderson

3.            2010 Board of Education calendar was approved. The calendar is posted on the District web site, http://www.royaloakschools.com/.

4.            The Board of Education Budget Workshop will be held February 6, from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.

5.            Special recognition and thanks to Board of Education members as part of School Board Recognition Month.

6.            Curriculum/Instruction Update - Dave Stafford, Oak Ridge Third Grade Teacher, and Karina Landis, English as a Second Language and Sixth Grade Math Teacher at Royal Oak Middle School, presented their classroom web sites which are used to communicate with students and parents.

7.            Economic/Audit/Budget Update - Cash Flow Borrowing, explanation of the need to borrow from the Michigan Municipal Bond Authority because of a cash shortfall. Revenue Estimating Conference report of revenue estimates for 2010 and 2011. There is a projected $423 million shortfall in the State School Aid Fund for next fiscal year. This is the equivalent of a $268 per student shortfall. As a result, a significant reduction in per pupil funding is expected for 2010-11. 8.            Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools and Beaumont Children's Hospital are presenting a Parent Empowerment Series at Northwood Elementary. The first lecture, "They did WHAT? Understanding and Managing Challenging Childhood Behavior", will be held Tuesday, January 26, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Call (248) 691-4774 to register.

9.            The Royal Oak High School A Cappella Choir will participate in the Michigan Educational Music Conference in Grand Rapids January 23.

10.           A Rotary International Help for Haiti Shelterbox link is available on the District web site, http://www.royaloakschools.com/.

11.           The Board approved a recommendation that the District cease to be a Center Program Operator for the Moderately Cognitively Impared and Physically Impaired Programs effective June 30, 2010. The District will continue to operate the programs on a local basis.

12.            The Board approved a cash flow borrowing recommendation which authorizes the District to borrow up to $6 million.

13.            The Board approved Contract Extension Agreements with the Royal Oak Education Association and the Royal Oak Educational Support Association.

The next Board of Education Meeting will be Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.
