Six Royal Oak Schools Earn
"Green Schools" Designation
ROYAL OAK, MI. - Royal Oak High School and five Royal Oak Neighborhood School District elementary schools - Addams, Keller, Northwood , Oak Ridge, Upton - have officially been named State of Michigan "Green Schools".
A school is eligible to receive a green school designation under Act No. 146 Public Acts of 2006 if the school meets ten of the following criteria:
- Recycle paper.
- Reuse magazines and newspapers for other projects.
- Adopt an endangered species animal
- Update print and non-print ecological materials regularly.
- Institute an energy savings program.
- Students participate in a planned program of energy savings.
- Host a visit by an ecological spokesperson.
- Have a birdhouse habitat project.
- Establish a natural Michigan garden project with native plants.
- Have solar power presentations or experiments, such as a solar cookout.
- Recycle printer cartridges.
- Recycle batteries.
- Recycle cellular telephones.
- Observe earth day in April.
- Have a poster contest to support ecology concerns in conjunction with earth day.
- Have science class projects in which students do home energy improvements.
Oak-Roots hosted a district-wide kick-off meeting in January to discuss recycling in the Royal Oak School District, the Green Schools program, and other environmental endeavors. A representative from each school reported on their school's recycling efforts.
