Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards

Royal Oak Schools' Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards were recently presented to:

  • Patricia Hein - Elementary School 4th Grade Teacher, Northwood
  • Keith Kohring - Royal Oak Middle School Band Teacher
  • David Barnett - Royal Oak High School Science Teacher

This award recognizes teachers for their exemplary teaching skills, dedication to Royal Oak students and commitment to the profession in public education. Teachers throughout the District are nominated by colleagues, principals, students, parents and others for their outstanding contributions to the classroom, to the District and to the profession.

Ms. Hein began her teaching career in Nebraska in 1972. She came to Royal Oak as a substitute in 1983 and the following year she began teaching at Northwood Elementary. In 2005 she was named Northwood Elementary Educator of the Year. She has been the student teacher supervisor since 1985 and has served on numerous curriculum committees.

Mr. Kohring came to Royal Oak as the Band Director of Addams Middle School in 1992. Subsequently, he has taught at Royal Oak Middle School, Keller, Addams, Northwood, Oak Ridge, Starr Elementary Schools. He is  a member of the International Trumpet Guild, Music Educators National Conference, Michigan Schools Band and Orchestra Association, North American Brass Band Association, and was the principal solo cornet player with the Motor City Brass Band from 1996-2005. In addition, Mr. Kohring is a Troy volunteer fire fighter.

Mr. Barnett has taught science at Royal Oak High School since 1997. In addition, he is the cross country and track coach. In 2000 and 2002, Mr. Barnett was named the Daily Tribune Cross Country Coach of the Year.

These three teachers will represent the District as nominees for the Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Program. All nominees will be recognized at the Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards program Thursday, May 8, at Oakland Schools.
