BOARD OF EDUCATION

August 14, 2008 MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

1.                  Next Board of Education Meeting will be September 11^th.  September 25^th Board Meeting is cancelled.

2.                  Northwood Elementary will host a Community Open House October 11^th to showcase the new building.

3.                  Despite increasing costs in the areas of health care, utilities, fuel and retirement, the District's General Fund spending was approximately $3.2 million less in 2007-08 than the prior year. This reduction in spending was primarily due to the cost savings associated with building consolidation and the other necessary budget reductions. Even with this reduction in spending, the many fine instructional programs for students have been maintained.

4.                  A construction update was presented on Northwood, ROHS and the Oakland and Upton parking lot resurfacing.

5.                  In a continuation of the Chinese Language & Culture Program, Keller Elementary and Royal Oak Middle School will welcome two guest teachers from China for the 2008-2009 school year.

6.                  The August 2^nd Bulldog Classic Car Show raised $950 for The Royal Oak Foundation for Public Education.

7.                  The School Messenger Emergency Notification System will be implemented this fall for District-/School-wide emergencies.

8.                  Recall of four teachers for a total of 17 for 2008-2009.

9.                  Adoption of the 2008-2009 School Calendar which will be posted on the District website http://www.royaloakschools.com/. Staff will report for their first day of school August 27^th, 8:00 a.m., Royal Oak Middle School.

10.              Board member building liaison appointments were announced:
