Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools Announces
Despite the rising cost of food, the Royal Oak Neighborhood School District is committed to operating the food service program on a break-even basis. Lunch and milk prices for the 2008-2009 school year will not be increased. Elementary school lunch is $2.25 (compared to an average price of $2.37 in other local districts). Secondary school lunch prices start at $2.50 (compared to an average price of $2.92 in other local districts). Breakfast is $1.25 .
Food service initiatives include:
- Expanded breakfast service at Royal Oak High School (ROHS), Royal Oak Middle School (ROMS) and Upton Elementary.
- Elimination of Trans fats at Royal Oak High School. (ROMS and elementary schools do not serve fried foods.)
- Transition to American Beverage Association approved beverages at ROHS. (ROMS and elementary schools are currently compliant.)
- Increased usage of whole grains at all schools.
- Continued focus on Balanced Choice meals and snacks.
Free & Reduced Lunch Program
Families who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program are encouraged to have their children participate. Those eligible for lunch benefits are also eligible for breakfast at the schools that schedule breakfast meals. The program is entirely confidential so everyone may feel comfortable using the service. Applications for free and reduced meals are mailed out each fall and are also available at each school. Those who were eligible at the end of 2007-08, eligibility will carry over for the first 30 days of the new school year.
