BOARD OF EDUCATION
November 13, 2008 MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
1. Best of Royal Oak saluted the Keller Elementary Japanese Club.
2. Toyoda Gosei North America, through their Adopt-a-School program, donated $10,000 for handicap accessible playground equipment at Keller Elementary.
3. BusinessWeek Magazine's second annual roundup of the "Best Places to Raise Your Kids" cited Royal Oak as one of three cities in Michigan. The selection was based on the following criteria: school performance; number of schools; household expenditures; crime rates; air quality; job growth; family income; museums, parks, theaters, and other amenities; and diversity. According to the magazine, school performance and safety were weighted most heavily.
4. Royal Oak High School students Amanda Andreski, Hailey Landis, Michelle Landis and Tyler Howell received Royal Oak Optimist Club Youth Appreciation Awards in recognition of their academic performance and service to the community.
5. Royal Oak Public Schools received the Michigan State Police "Certificate of Excellence" for achieving a 100% Pass Rate for School Bus Safety Inspections.
6. School bus transportation update showed of the students who are eligible and requested service, 48% of high school students, 80% of middle school students and 70% of elementary school students ride the bus.
7. Approved Early Notification Incentive for eligible and retiring Royal Oak Education Association members who submit letters of resignation by February 13, 2009.
8. Approved the contract ratification of the Royal Oak Educational Support Association ( ROESA) and Royal Oak Educational Support Personnel Association (ROESPA) for the 2008-09 fiscal year.
9. Due to the projected cash shortfall in the current year, the Board authorized the District to borrow up to $5 million from the Michigan Municipal Bond Authority.
10. Approved an extension on the sale of a parcel of the Longfellow property site.
11. Recognized newly-elected Board of Education member Marty Cardamone.

Friday, November 14, and Saturday, November 15, at 8:00 p.m. & Sunday, November 16, at 3:00 p.m. - Royal Oak High School (ROHS) Drama Club will present "Little Shop of Horrors" in the Kimball Auditorium.
Saturday, November 15 - Royal Oak High School PTSA Craft Show from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Thursday, December 4 - Performing Arts Department will present the All City Vocal Music Festival at 7:00 p.m. in the Royal Oak High School Gymnasium.
