"Best Places in America to Raise Kids" by Business Week

BusinessWeek Magazine's second annual roundup of the "Best Places in America to Raise Your Kids" cited Royal Oak as one of three cities in Michigan. Ann Arbor was rated first followed by Royal Oak and Shelby.

BusinessWeek teamed up with OnBoard Informatics, a New York-based provider of real estate analysis, to come up with the list of each state's best affordable towns for raising children. They selected towns with at least 50,000 residents and a median family income between $40,000 and $100,000.

The selection was based on the following criteria: school performance; number of schools; household expenditures; crime rates; air quality; job growth; family income; museums, parks, theaters, and other amenities; and diversity. According to the magazine, school performance and safety were weighted most heavily.
