ROHS Acorn Newsmagazine
The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) announced the results of its annual state-wide journalism awards for 2009 at the Lansing Convention Center Tuesday, April 28, and the Royal Oak High School Acorn Newsmagazine came home with top honors, earning the coveted "Spartan" award for the best in scholastic journalism among Division 1 high schools.
"The Acorn earned this distinction based on its adherence to sound journalistic standards, balanced coverage, story content, photography and design," said adviser Ann Maudlin. "It's something we've been working toward all year, and the students gain a real sense of journalistic integrity and accomplishment when their efforts are celebrated in this way."
The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association is a non-profit organization composed of Michigan scholastic journalism teachers and publications advisers and their students. The organization is committed to promoting and recognizing excellence in journalism at all levels through education, training and support of student journalists and their advisers.
Seniors Mackenzie Miller and Caitlin Kiesel serve as co-editors in chief of the Acorn. Working with Miller and Kiesel are layout editor Gabi Rome, photographers Sam Doyle and Mac Gibson, and business manager Brandon Hogan.
Maudlin praised the editors as principled and enthusiastic leaders who enjoy the opportunity to work with others.
"The editors demonstrated a great sense of individual talents, and established a sound direction for the magazine this year," Maudlin said. "Their efforts fueled a high standard and a sense of shared ownership, which are among the most important keys in our success."
