SUMMER (AND OTHER!) LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES (AND NOT JUST FOR SENIORS!!) Cool

The University of Michigan has summer programs in various areas including:

  • Grace Hopper Project: For students who will have finished 9th or 10th grade this school year and are interested in computer science or engineering. There is a fee, but partial scholarships are available. Applications due June 4, 2010.
  • School of Art and Design: Both fee and non-fee based programs available!
  • RobotC for Girls: Girls who have completed grades 8-12 who are interested in science, programming, math, and engineering, this programming day program from July 12-16, 2010 could be for you! No prior experience is necessary and you may apply for limited partial scholarships.  Deadline is April 16, 2010 to apply.

AIMS (ANR Institute for Multicultural Students), sponsored by the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, is offering a one week program during the second week of July that gives students a chance to learn more about programs and careers in food and agricultural sciences, natural resources, and related fields. Students in 9th-11th grades may apply for this FREE opportunity! Applications must be postmarked by March 27, 2010!

The Royal Oak Kiwanis Club, in cooperation with the Michigan State Police, is sponsoring a Law Enforcement Career Academy Program from July 11-16, 2010.  It is open to students in grades 10-12male and female, with a grade point average of 2.0 or greater.  Applications are available in the Student Service Center. The deadline to apply is March 26, 2010 and the fees are being paid by the Kiwanis Club.

All high school students interested in science!!  Lawrence Technological University in Southfield is offering two different programs for you! Extreme Science Saturdays (Two left! April 17 and May 8, 2010) are FREE and from June 28-July 2, 2010 or July 12-July 16, 2010, the Forensic Summer Science Institute ($400 commuter/$550 residential including meals--$190 need based scholarships are available) For more information click on the Lawrence Tech link above!

Oakland University offers several opportunities including:

  • Summer Mathematics Institute--A FREE summer program running from June 28-August 6, 2010 for high school students who are bright and gifted in mathermatics.  Take college-level math classes and earn credit!! FREE!! Click link for information and application...deadline is May 15, 2010.
  • Business Management/Entrepreneurship Summer Workshop:  For 11th and 12th graders--learn about handling personal finances, starting your own business, marketing, technology in business, ethics and social responsibility, and global business.  This runs from July 12-16, 2010 from 9 am-4 pm daily.  The cost is $400.  For inf

Wayne State University is offering several workshops this summer including:

  • High School Engineering Training Institute for 10th and 11th graders from Monday, June 28-Friday, July 23, 2010.  The deadline to apply is April 15.
  • Project SEED (Summer Educational Experience for Disadvantaged Students), running from Monday, June 21 through Friday, August 20, 2010 for 11th and 12th graders in good academic standing who would like to pursue studies in Chemistry in college.  The cost is FREE and students will be paid; application packets are being accepted mid-April to mid-May.
  • Summer High School Debate Camp for students aged 13 to 19 to be held Monday, June 21 through Thursday, July 1, 2010.  The cost depends on student's skill level--all students are encouraged to apply.

The Center for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit is offering the following:

  • One Week at a Time summer camps from June 14 through August 6, 2010 for students up through the age of 15.  Students get a discount for signing up for more than one week. 
  • Precollege Summer Experience:  For Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors to help master art techniques and earn college credit.  Costs vary and scholarships are available. Applications due by May for scholarship consideration.

Michigan Technological University has these programs:

  • Women in Engineering:  Freshmen, Sophomore, and Junior girls who would like to investigate careers in engineering and science can apply for this program.  It runs from June 20-26, 2010 and the application deadline is April 1.  The cost of the program is the application fee of $175, to be paid after acceptance into the program...all other costs are covered by scholarships!   • Engineering Scholars Program:  A program for traditionally underrepresented Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors who want to investigate careers in engineering and science.  This program is also covered by scholarships and runs from June 27-July 3, 2010.  The cost to the student is the application fee of $175; the rest of the fees are paid by scholarships.  The application deadline is April 1.  Apply online now by clicking here!  For more info, check out this link.
  • Career and Adventure Explorations:  Intensive week-long looks into many fields of interest in six different field including Business, Computing, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Outdoor and Environmental Studies, and Science and Technology!  Enrollment is first come, first served and students are accepted until classes are filled....openings are limited, though!
