During a two week period in January 2009, the students at Royal Oak Middle School designed and created a 4 x 8 foot Fresco, which is now part of the wall in the school’s Café. It was a tremendous group effort that included over 325 students from all grade levels—6th, 7th, and 8th.
Rick and Deb Zuccarini, professional artists and experts in Fresco Art, headed the project. Fresco consists of painting with pure pigments on wet limestone plaster. It is the same process that Diego Rivera used to make his famous murals, which are located at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
The mural has given the building a unique piece of art that all of the students at ROMS are proud of. We can all feel the increased level of ownership the students feel toward their school. The project was funded by a grant from the Royal Oak Foundation for Public Education.
